Montessori Kindermusik: Young Preschoolers, Part 2!

Hello, Montessori Families!

This week is our LAST Kindermusik class for the semester.  I feel like we have really accomplished a LOT in this 2nd half.  The newbies to Kindermusik are really coming out of their shells, and all of the kiddos are really impressing me with how willing they are to SING during our lessons!  It is very impressive for this age group!  WOW!

Let's back up to Halloween week---
We did a poem about 5 little pumpkins using a special glove that they could take a pumpkin off or put one on, depending on the words of the poem.

It went like this:
5 little pumpkins sitting on a gate
The first one said, "Oh my!  It's getting late!"
The second one said, "I see witches in the air"
The third one said, "But we don't care!"
The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run!"
The fifth one said, "It's just Halloween FUN!"
Then ooooooooh went the wind!  And OUT went the lights!
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of site!

Then we talked about WIND---and instruments that use WIND in order to play.  We tried making a whistle sound!  It was super fun when we got it to make some noise!

Falling Leaves
We did an activity called falling leaves---It helped us to learn lots of different movement words, like swishing, twirling, twisting, swaying, drifting, etc.  Then we used these cool ribbon wands to do those movements as we imitated leaves drifting down to the ground!

Dancing with Finger Lights!
We had a little fun with finger lights, dancing and wiggling to the music!  The lights don't really show up in pictures, but the kids were SO excited as they watched their lights making lighted pathways around the room!

A Cup of Tea
This little finger poem was a favorite---see if your little one will do it for you!
Here's a CUP!  (Hold one fist out)
And here's a CUP!  (Hold other fist out)
And here's a POT OF TEA! (Close both hands together, making a "big round tummy")
Now pour a cup! (use the thumb of one fist to pretend to pour into the other cup)
And pour a cup! (do the same thing with the other side)
And have a drink with me!  (Pretend to drink your tea!)

I'm a Little Teapot!
We sang "I'm a Little Teapot" with the actions.  When we "poured out", we did a side bend and tried to touch the floor!

Using Beads to Practice Making High and Low Sounds!
We worked with some building beads to make towers.  As they added a bead, we sang a major scale, starting with the low notes and building one note for each bead.  Of course, it was super fun when the beads fell over and we had to make our voices "fall down" the scale too!

DING DONG!
One of the goals for this unit was to get the kiddos to sing the interval of a 3rd.  A "third" sounds like a doorbell.  We sang many songs that used this "sing-songy" interval and we would practice singing "Ding Dong" as we did a fun little activity about someone coming to our door!  I had a picture of each child that I would alternate through a picture of a door, and we would sing WHO was at our door, using that same interval of a third.  On each child's turn, I would have them push a pretend doorbell and SING, "Ding Dong"!  Guess what?   They did AMAZING!  Each child sang it for me, which is absolutely fabulous!  I am so proud of them!

Our song sounded like this:
Ding Dong, Ding Dong!
Who's at my door?
It's Addy!  Addy!  Hello, Addy!

Then, we practiced making doorbell sounds using resonator bars.  We talked about how the smaller bell would make the higher pitch and the longer bell would make the lower pitch.  This was a favorite!

I thank you GREATLY for the opportunity to work with your precious little one.  I appreciate your value in early childhood music ed!  After this week, we will be "on break" until February.  I hope you will sign up for our Spring semester of Kindermusik.  Our unit will be called "Fiddle Dee Dee" and will focus on the String Instrument Family, and it is so much fun!
